A Lesson in Humility: Never Underestimate Others

Introduction

Humility in Islam is a fundamental virtue emphasized throughout Islamic teachings. In the rich tapestry of Islamic history, numerous tales offer deep reflections on the virtue of humility. Among these, a compelling account is detailed by Abu al-Hasan al-Sabi in his book, “Al-Hafawat al-Nadirah“. This tale not only illuminates the strength of character but also imparts a timeless lesson on the importance of not underestimating others—a principle deeply rooted in Islamic teachings on humility.

The Story of AbduLLAH ibn al-Hussein

AbduLLAH ibn al-Hussein served as a scribe to the minister Abu al-Qasim al-Ala’ ibn al-Hassan. His duties often required him to act on behalf of the minister during his travels. It was during one of these periods that he encountered a fellow scribe named “Al-Mudilji”, who requested the use of a fully equipped mule.

Abu al-Hasan al-Sabi recounts that while AbduLLAH was serving in the minister’s absence, Al-Mudilji sent a message asking for a mule complete with its saddle and other accessories. AbduLLAH, however, did not hold Al-Mudilji in high regard or close companionship. Ignoring the essence of humility in Islam, he chose to ignore the request, not even bothering to reply or offer an apology. He dismissed the plea without a second thought, underscoring his disregard by returning the message unanswered.

A person of authority underestimating another individual

Al-Mudilji, undeterred, sent the request back with a poignant verse written on the back of the message:

Perhaps one who asks in need, if you deny him today, may be the one you need tomorrow

Despite this, AbduLLAH again returned the message without response. Time passed, and fortunes changed dramatically. The minister, Abu al-Qasim al-Ala’ ibn al-Hassan, was replaced, and to AbduLLAH’s astonishment, Al-Mudilji rose to his former master’s position. Fearing retribution for his previous disdain, AbduLLAH found himself summoned by Minister Al-Mudilji. Expecting the worst, he was surprised when Al-Mudilji not only received him warmly but also elevated his status and treated him with great honor.

The true lesson came when Al-Mudilji eventually showed AbduLLAH the very message he had once disregarded. In that moment, AbduLLAH realized the gravity of his prior actions. However, instead of punishment, Al-Mudilji chose to teach him a lesson in humility, reminding him never to underestimate anyone and always to consider the consequences of his actions. The minister’s act of forgiveness and guidance transformed AbduLLAH’s understanding of humility in Islam and respect, characteristics that are cherished in Islamic culture.

Conclusion

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the high moral standards upheld in Islam, where even in the face of disregard, the response is graciousness and instruction. It emphasizes that no matter one’s position or power, respect for others’ and humility in Islam needs is a key aspect of Islamic teachings on humility. This enduring lesson from Islamic history not only enriches our character but also strengthens the bonds within our community, ensuring we remember the importance of humility in our daily interactions.
