Introduction
This article, the first in our series, “In the Brightened Corridors of the Prophet’s Life Story“, invites readers to journey through various books on the Prophet’s life, suited for all levels—from beginner to advanced. Click here to dive into the full series, ALLAH willing.
The title “In the Brightened Corridors of the Prophet’s Life Story (Seerah)“ was chosen to highlight those important moments in the Prophet’s life that often go unnoticed. These are insights that may be tucked away in the details and nuances of His biography. Through this series, we aim to bring these events and lessons to light, hoping that ALLAH, the Blessed and Exalted, grants us the ability to make this knowledge beneficial in our daily lives.
The Foundation of Our Connection with the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him)
In this first article, I wanted to introduce some valuable books on the Prophet’s biography, following the principle, “Don’t give me a fish; teach me how to fish”. These books serve as meaningful companions, especially during Ramadan, offering insights into the life of the Prophet (Peace be upon Him). Teaching the Prophet’s biography is one of the most rewarding subjects, particularly for children, youth, and young adults, as the connection to the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) is an essential part of faith. Without Him, we would not be a Muslim nation; our identity as Muslims is rooted in following ALLAH’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him).
The Varying Depths of Biographical Works
Some scholars hold that studying the Prophet’s biography is obligatory, considering those who neglect it to be at fault, while others believe only its essential aspects are mandatory. Even if viewed as recommended, with only the basics required, connecting our children, youth, and young adults to the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) is crucial for this nation. After all, who better to present as a role model to ourselves and our children than ALLAH’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him)?
The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) exemplifies perfection in both character and creation, offering a complete model of human experience. His life provides lessons suited to the needs of all: educators learn from His teaching methods, rulers from His governance, and military personnel from His strategies. Economists and sociologists also find guidance in His approach to financial and social matters. Those exploring family relationships, His interactions with His wives and children, as well as those seeking insights on ethics, patience, and interpersonal conduct—all find what they need in the Prophet’s biography (Peace be upon Him).
Resources Across Different Levels of Study
Islamic schools with a focus on politics turn to the Prophetic biography for guidance, often dedicating extensive writings to this aspect of His life. Likewise, Salafi scholars have focused on verifying and authenticating the Prophetic biography, distinguishing authentic reports from weaker ones. Sufi and educational schools, on the other hand, express deep reverence and emotion toward the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) in their writings. Each group draws from the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) what it can, based on its unique abilities and perspectives. As Al-Busiri beautifully expressed,
“All of them seek from ALLAH’s Messenger“.
Detailed Guide Through Prophetic Biography Books
For those beginning their journey into the Prophetic biography, a wonderful starting point is “The Life of Prophet Muhammad: Highlights and Lessons”1 by Sheikh Dr. Mustafa Al-Sibai. This concise and engaging book presents each event followed by key lessons and morals, making it ideal for readers of all ages. It can also be used to teach children—reading a biographical event together and then reflecting on the valuable lessons drawn from it.
Another valuable book is “The Kindergarten Of Lights In The Biography Of The Chosen Prophet”2 by Sheikh Safiur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri, also known for his renowned work “The Sealed Nectar”. This concise book, “The Kindergarten Of Lights”, can be seen as the essence of his exploration of the Prophetic biography. It offers verified details about locations, names, and events in a brief and enjoyable style. While it leans toward a narrative, rich in storytelling without explicit lessons and morals, it encourages readers to pause, reflect, and draw their own insights. This approach makes it an excellent resource for teaching children and young readers, allowing the teacher to add personal reflections and lessons.
These two compact books are perfect starting points for anyone interested in exploring the Prophetic biography.
Intermediate Level Books on the Prophet’s Biography
For those ready to delve deeper, there are slightly larger, intermediate books, and one of the most significant among them is “Fiqh us-Seerah” (Jurisprudence of the Prophet’s Biography)3 by Sheikh Mohammad Al-Ghazali. Known for his warm and heartfelt approach, Sheikh Al-Ghazali fills his writing with admiration and devotion toward the Prophet (Peace be upon Him). He even remarks,
“I don’t write about the Prophet as one might write on a scientific topic, but as a soldier would write about his leader”
This book, rich with profound insights and sincere emotion, offers readers an experience that is both enlightening and deeply moving.
Also, there is “The Sealed Nectar“4 which we mentioned earlier by Sheikh Safiur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri, a book that won first prize in a competition about the Prophetic biography in Mecca by the Muslim World League.
Another remarkable book that distills the essence of biographical works is “The Noble Life of The Prophet”5 by Dr. Ali Al-Sallabi, a renowned Libyan historian. Sheikh Dr. Ali Al-Sallabi possesses an exceptional skill for compiling and synthesizing material, setting his work apart in this field. His book, “The Noble Life of The Prophet”, brings together the richness of what has been written about the Prophet’s life in two volumes (sometimes printed as one). This comprehensive work is beautifully crafted, offering a wealth of lessons and morals from a wide array of sources.
Advanced and Specialized Works
An excellent example is “The Dynamic Approach to the Prophetic Biography”6 by Sheikh Munir Ghadban. Having dedicated his life to studying the Prophetic biography, Sheikh Al-Ghadban aimed with this book to adopt a style similar to Sayyid Qutb’s “In the Shade of the Quran”7.
Influenced by Qutb’s ability to capture the essence of each Quranic chapter, Al-Ghadban sought to similarly outline the defining features of each phase of the Prophet’s life. He organizes the biography into phases, summarizing the unique characteristics of each one. This approach makes it a distinctive and beautifully structured work.
Authenticated Collections of the Prophet’s Biography
Among the essential books that every Muslim library should include are those focused on the authentic Prophetic biography, as weak hadiths or narrations can sometimes obscure certain lessons and meanings. One such valuable work is “The Authentic Prophetic Biography”8 by Sheikh Akram Al-Omari. Sheikh Al-Omari led a pioneering effort to compile an authentic historical account of the Prophet’s life, following the principles of hadith scholarship as closely as possible—though recognizing the challenges in applying this methodology to historical narrations. He enlisted a team of students to sift through the Prophetic biography and extract reliable narrations, resulting in this insightful and carefully curated book.
There is another attempt by Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Ali in his book “Authentic Prophetic Biography“9, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Suwayani‘s book “The Prophetic Biography as Narrated in Authentic Hadiths“.10
In truth, there are many books in this field, but these are the most prominent.
Extensive Multi-Volume Works
Then there are the more extensive works, as the deeper one delves into the Prophetic biography, the greater the desire to understand the Prophet’s personality (Peace be upon Him). Among the most important of these lengthy books is “Muhammad the Messenger of ALLAH”11 by Sheikh Muhammad Al Sadek Arjun, an often overlooked Egyptian scholar. This four-volume masterpiece is a remarkable, enriching, and enjoyable work, offering profound insights into the life and character of the Prophet (Peace be upon Him).
Also notable is “Zaad Al-Ma’aad” (Provisions for the Hereafter)12 by Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, a beautiful and comprehensive encyclopedia of the Prophetic biography.
One of the most extensive works ever written on the subject is “Al-Zurqani‘s Commentary on Al-Mawahib Al-Laduniyyah”13, a deeply thorough compilation covering the life and teachings of the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) in remarkable detail.
Another monumental work is “Entertaining the Hearing”14 by Al-Maqrizi, which spans an impressive twenty volumes.
Unique and Specialized Works
There are several fascinating books from which we can gain unique insights. Among them is “The Administrative Arrangements”15 by the renowned Moroccan scholar Sheikh Abdul Hayy Al-Kettani. This book reveals aspects of the Prophetic biography rarely explored in other works.
Additionally, Sheikh Hazem Abu Ismail—may ALLAH grant him freedom—offers valuable insights in a compelling introduction that I compiled into a small book titled “What We Don’t Know About ALLAH’s Messenger”16. These sources provide us with reflections we can carry with us.
We pray that ALLAH, the Blessed and Exalted, teaches us what benefits us, grants us benefit from what HE teaches, and increases us in knowledge.
